Indspire is a national Indigenous-led charitable organization that invests in Indigenous Peoples to help reach their highest potential in education and by inspiring achievement. Our partnership with Indspire began with investments in Indigenous post-secondary education, but today it has evolved into a 360-degree approach where we focus on investing in K-12 programs, post-secondary scholarships and events that recognize Indigenous leaders.

00:00:09.220 —> 00:00:14.010
I think it was about 8 months before my mom passed away.
00:00:14.220 —> 00:00:19.230
The doctors had told us, we’re kind of running out of options here.
00:00:20.130 —> 00:00:29.160
My mom picked up a book and she said, “I think I’m going to write my PHD thesis on Spirituality and the Native Nations.”
00:00:32.200 —> 00:00:36.120
And I said, “But you’re dying.”
00:00:37.030 —> 00:00:44.120
She said, “No, I’m not. Until I take my last breath, I am living.”
00:00:45.080 —> 00:00:51.180
She was given 3 months and she lived 3 years.
00:00:55.230 —> 00:01:03.200
Just over 6 months after my mom died, my sister died. I really just felt lost.
00:01:04.060 —> 00:01:10.070
I had signed up to do my MBA, but I was feeling a little bit off and I had been feeling off for a while.
00:01:10.110 —> 00:01:16.190
I couldn’t walk for any length of time without feeling like my heart was going to beat out of my chest.
00:01:17.200 —> 00:01:25.230
It was then I was told I had pulmonary hypertension. Just a long, slow, painful death.
00:01:27.120 —> 00:01:34.200
I laid down and waited to die. Then I remembered what my mom taught me.
00:01:36.110 —> 00:01:45.160
She was teaching me the whole time. She taught me how to be a mother. She taught me how to be a wife. She taught me how to be a student.
00:01:45.170 —> 00:01:50.120
And now she had taught me how to deal with this part of my life.
00:01:54.220 —> 00:02:07.220
I have something to prove to myself. I applied to the University of Arizona and have been accepted. I start doing another Master’s Degree in September.
00:02:15.070 —> 00:02:23.030
The value of Indspire and the Indspire Awards is that you’re taking one person and you’re helping them change their life.
00:02:23.040 —> 00:02:26.170
And that’s how we make change, one person at a time.
00:02:27.020 —> 00:02:35.050
We have industry supporting people like myself to go to school so that we can represent our communities.
00:02:38.030 —> 00:02:43.000
What I’d like to do with my education is to go back and work with my nation.
00:02:45.170 —> 00:02:54.130
I’m not going to lay down and wait to die. Until I take my last breath, I’m living.
