Application Dates

  • Does Shell Canada have specific application dates?

We have introduced opening and closing dates to submit your application to enable us to process applications more quickly. We review applications once we receive them and fill roles on an ongoing basis so we advise you apply as early as possible.

  • Full-time application dates:
    • August 15th – December 1
  • Internship application dates:
    • August 15th – December 1
    •  January 1 – March 1
  • I wanted to apply for the Shell Graduate Program or the Shell Assessed Internship but have missed the deadline, what should I do?

You will have to wait until the applications are open again. The opening dates for the Shell Graduate Program and the Shell Assessed Internship program will be displayed on our website.

Co-op/Internship/Summer Work Terms

  • I’m enrolled in a Co-op program at my university. Would Shell be able to offer a 4 or 8-month term?

Yes. We offer a variety of 4, 8, 12 or 16-month work terms, starting in January and May. See section below regarding start dates for more information.

  • I’m looking for a summer job and am not enrolled in my university’s co-op or internship programs. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes. Shell offers 4-month work terms throughout the summer months (May – August). Co-op and non-co-op students are welcome to apply.  See section below regarding start dates for more information.

Eligibility

  • What are the entry requirements to apply for the Shell Graduate Program or the Shell Assessed Internships?

For the Shell Graduate Program, you must be in your final year of study or you completed your degree less than 3 years ago.

To be eligible for the Internship Program, you need to be an actively enrolled university student who will complete at least one more semester of education following your internship.

We hire students who are 12+ months away from graduation for “earlier year” student opportunities and top performers from this group are often offered return opportunities. We also hire students who are within 12 months of graduation for “penultimate” student opportunities, and assess their performance for full-time employment upon graduation in the Shell Graduate Program.

MBA & PhD

  • Does Shell consider students in PhD or Masters programs?

Yes, although the majority of our roles require Bachelor degrees, there are some roles that are suited for PhD or Masters students (specifically, for R&D and G&G roles; with Post-Doc research and/or industry experience – up to 3 year’s total experience).

  • Does Shell consider students in MBA programs?

The majority of our commercial roles at Shell require Bachelor degrees only, and we hire a very limited number of Masters and MBA students.

Applying Outside Of Canada

You must be legally entitled to work in Canada by way of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or holding a valid work permit authorizing you to commence employment with Shell prior to applying for the role.

Reapplying To The Programs

  • I was unsuccessful in my application for the Shell Graduate Program or Shell Assessed Internship. Can I reapply?

If you have reached the Stage 1 Assessments (Online Tests and Self Recorded Video Interview) or Stage 2, Part 1 (Case Study) for either the Shell Graduate Program or the Shell Assessed Internship Program and were unsuccessful, you can reapply 12 months from the date of your application.

If you have completed the full Stage 2 assessment or completed the Shell Assessed (Penultimate) Internship, you can apply again 3 years from your assessment date.

We advise these timings to allow candidates to build up the necessary skills or competencies that are required to be successful in the application process.

Application Status

  • I’m waiting for a date for my Stage 2 Final Assessment; what should I do?

If you have received an email advising that you have reached the Stage 2 Final Assessment, we are in the process of scheduling assessments and we will be contacting you once we have an available time and date. I haven’t got a response to my application. What should I do?

You can track your application online by logging into your account. In the initial stages of the application process, applicants are given 10 days from receipt of their email invitation to complete each of the Online Assessments and Self Recorded Interview. After which if either of elements are not completed, the application is automatically withdrawn and you can re-apply in 12 months’ time from the date of application.

If you have not received an invitation to the Online Tests or the Self Recorded Interviews, you must contact our team within this timeframe to complete these elements. The Online Test and the Self Recorded Video Interview come in separate emails and may end up in your Junk mail. We cannot extend the 10-day window or re-activate the elements of the first stage if you contact us afterward the 10-day window. Contact us at: careers@shell.com

START DATES FOR THE SHELL ASSESSED INTERNSHIP & SHELL GRADUATE PROGRAM

Internship Program:

Shell recruits three different types of university students for the Assessed Internships Program:

Co-op Students

Co-op student terms are typically between 4 and 8 months in length, and are offered two times per year, starting in January and May.  Students are required to apply for positions through their co-op office, as well as through Shell’s online portal. Note that students must complete Shell’s application process prior to being considered for an interview.  Please refer to your co-op office calendar and guidelines for specific application instructions.

Internship Students

Internship student terms are typically between 8 and 16 months in length, and are offered two times per year, starting in January and May.  Students find specific internship positions through job postings advertised on campus, and are required to apply through Shell’s online portal to be considered for an interview.

Summer Students

Summer student roles are offered for four month terms starting each year in May.  Job advertisements are posted at many Canadian universities, and students are required to apply through Shell’s online portal to be considered for an interview.

Timing for Applications:

  • For January-starting student employment opportunities, we accept applications between August and November.
  • For May-starting student employment opportunities, we accept applications between August and February.

Shell Graduate Program:

For the Shell Graduate Program, start dates occur year-round and will be discussed with the applicant and the relevant business.

Selection criteria

English is not my first language; will this be taken into account during my interview?

While fluency in English is necessary to participate in a Shell Recruitment Day, Gourami Business Challenge or an Internship your ability in English is not a selection criterion. If you’re not a native English speaker, you will be given additional time to prepare where appropriate, and you are welcome to bring a dictionary. In locations where a SRD, Gourami Business Challenge or an Internship is conducted in a language other than English, a level of fluency in that language is required.

I have already graduated and have some work experience; am I eligible to apply?

Yes. You may be surprised to find that you wouldn't be the only graduate in Shell who joins us with previous work experience. In terms of process, you will still need to apply in the same way as any other graduate.

I have applied before; can I re-apply?

Yes, you can re-apply if you have been unsuccessful. However, if you do wish to re-apply, we advise that you should leave:

At least 12 months from the date of your previous application, if you were rejected before or after the interview stage. Three years from the date of the final outcome of your previous application, if you were invited to a Shell Recruitment Day or an assessed Internship.

We advise this to enable you to have a better chance of being successful the second time round. The additional time will allow you to demonstrate that you have developed yourself further and have gained additional experience and/or qualifications.

What do you mean by graduate?

A Graduate is someone who has been awarded a degree by a university or college.

While a strong academic record is important, our selection processes are designed to assess your Capacity, Achievement and Relationship.

What kind of tests would I have to pass before a job offer is made final?

Generally speaking, you would have to achieve the expected result in your degree qualification (if you have not already graduated) and, where required, received a valid work permit for the location you have been hired for (if you do not presently have a legal right to work there already).

What minimum qualifications do I need to apply?

We've created an online Degree Matcher to help you to identify the career options most suitable for you. The Degree Matcher is simply to help guide your choices and the listings of degrees and disciplines are not exhaustive. We will not retain any of the information you input.

You should at least have completed or are studying for a bachelor degree and above.

What selection criteria do you use to assess applications for your student opportunities?

While a strong academic record is important, our selection processes are designed to assess your Capacity, Achievement and Relationship.

Miscellaneous

Do you sponsor the studies of individual students?

We only consider sponsoring students from developing countries who are interested in carrying out postgraduate studies in the UK and the Netherlands. First-degree students are not eligible. We have 90 scholarships available in total, administered by The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund.

The program is a partnership with the Universities of Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Oxford, Imperial College London and University College London, who also contribute to the funding.

Please visit the local country website to find out whether we offer Scholarship there.

For more details please visit Shell Scholar

Will I be paid during my internship?

Yes you will be compensated during your internship. The amount depends on the country.

How many graduates do you employ each year?

We have graduate employment opportunities in most of the countries where we operate. In some countries where we have a higher operating presence we are able to offer more opportunities - for example the Netherlands, UK, Germany, US, China, Malaysia, Qatar and Nigeria.

Please visit the local country website to find out whether we have graduate employment opportunities there.

What is an In-house Day?

An In-house Day is a one day interactive event at which we host a selected group of students at a Shell location with the aim to give them a feel of what it would be like to work for Shell. Included are usually presentations from Shell Recruitment, recent graduates, senior staff and a site tour and/or a case study or workshop.

What sorts of jobs are available?

We offer a range of jobs in many different Technical and Commercial fields.

Use our Degree Matcher to learn what opportunities you could be offered to at Shell based on your field of studies.

Will I work outside my home country?

In most cases your first assignment will be in your home country. However, because we are a global company, the job you are matched with may mean relocating abroad. In Europe, for example, your application will be considered both for opportunities in the country you are studying/living in and across the region. You are welcome to note your personal preferences for location on your application. One of the clear dynamics of working for Shell is the possibility of a future posting outside your home country, and we provide full support for all staff to do so.
